Georgia BMPs – Presenter: Ritchie Mullen/Water Quality Specialist/GA Forestry Commission

This course includes updates on the 2023 BMP Survey and BMP 2019 Manual.  It also includes information on General Forestry BMP’s and the BMP Assurance Exam Field Checklist such as roads, streamside management zones, stream and wetland crossings, timber harvesting, and servicing of equipment and trash.

Georgia Forestry Association’s Goals and Mission to Advocate for the Forestry Sector – Presenter: Jake Matthews/Vice President Government Affairs/Georgia Forestry Association

Topics addressed will be current state and federal policy issues that are being worked on by GFA and others to include truck weights, private property rights, forestry innovations (mass timber and sustainable aviation fuel, lignin-based batteries), EU Deforestation Regulation, international market access, and more. How attendees can be engaged with GFA through membership, participation in policy committees, and events across the state will also be addressed.

Bridging the Divide: Forestry Solutions for Mitigation of Human-Wildlife Conflict  – Presenter: Alexia Goodman/Program Chair-Conservation Law Enforcement/Athens Technical College

This course will discuss how forests, particularly in regions like Georgia, are vital ecosystems that support a wide variety of wildlife.  It will also discuss how urbanization and land use changes continue to encroach on forested areas, how human-wildlife conflicts are becoming more frequent, how these conflicts can range from crop loss, property damage, livestock predation, to human activities disrupting critical wildlife habitats, and how foresters play a crucial role in reducing these conflicts by managing forests in ways that balance ecological health and human needs.
